Pressestimmen

You can only capture the zeitgeist of The Parachute Regiment if you write candidly and astonishingly well: Helen Parr triumphantly does both (Major General Chip Chapman (Platoon Commander, 2 PARA, Falklands))This is an extraordinary book. It is partly about the Falklands War itself and the terrible things that the Paras endured, and the terrible things that some of them did, but it is also about the white working class of the 1970s and why some men born into this class ended up marching across an island that most of them had never heard of. Thoughtful and sometimes heart-breaking, if I had to recommend one book about the British Army since the Second World War, and perhaps, for that matter, one book about British society in the 1980s, this would be it. (Richard Vinen, author of National Service)Achieves a rare combination of intimacy and range... I couldn't recommend Our Boys more highly (Rachel Seiffert)This beautifully written, intensely poignant book in which the life and death of Helen Parr's nineteen year old uncle Dave, killed on Wireless Ridge above Port Stanley on the very last day of the Falklands War, is set carefully in the context of Britain's twentieth century military, political and social history. It will leave a real mark on the minds of those who read it. She has done her uncle Dave more than proud. (Peter Hennessy)Powerful and moving, Our Boys is a fascinating insight into the nature of combat and represents an important contribution to our understanding of the Falklands War, The Parachute Regiment and post-war Britain. (Dan Jarvis MP)A classic. Truly superb... something unique and original. It does great justice to the Paras, and is the most honest and honourable homage possible to the author's uncle Dave. (Major Nigel Price, 7th Gurkha Rifles)

Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Helen Parr was aged seven when she was woken up by her mother with the news that her uncle had been killed in the Falklands War. This book is based in part on her wish to understand what happened: the story of a specific paratrooper, the world in which he lived and the people he left behind, and the Falklands War itself. She is a historian of modern Britain who teaches international relations at Keele University. Her essay 'The Eurosceptic's Moment' was co-winner of the 2017 Hennessy Prize.

as a former British paratrooper who served in1957/58 as national service LT I found that the authors assessments of the character and initiative/morale of the paratroopers was accurate and perceptive. Her insights into the social structure in the UK and the nature of the working class/being working class were on the mark. The importance of the P troop training and its weeding out process epitomized by the drop out rate upon the troopers esprit and pride were also on the mark

Exce llent story. Very sad. A story of minimal prospects, pride, political and individual manipulation, broken lives, wasted efforts, savagery, and the aftermath of the Falklands War.Its a story that is universal for many ex servicemen and the lasting scars even when the wounds have healed. The authors uncle joined an elite UK paratrooper unit because of poor prospects in his civilian life. He was a fatal casualty in the Falklands War. His unit suffered higher casualties than was expected. The Argentine soldiers despite poor training and leadership resisted. The overconfidence and poor performance by the units officers is gone into. The whole campaign was a political " be tough" ploy by the Thatcher regime. The UK naval contingent also suffered many casualties and lost several ships. It all seems so offhand and like many US wars completely optional and needless. The paratroopers are considered to be elite troops but have a rather checkered success story. They were used to control sectarian fighting in Northern Ireland ( where they massacred many civilians). In WW 2 their big effort was at Arnhem. ( they failed at that due to many factors, one of which was command decisions). It seems to.me that these units suffer from bad planning, command, prep and the men suffer the consequences. This book is a very good read and it touches on many areas. I recommemd it.
